Vaughan Williams’ A London Symphony

Michael Francis, conductor
Esther Yoo, violin

Elgar: In the South (Alassio)
Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto
Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 2, “A London Symphony”

Think of it as a mini British festival. Michael Francis takes you to his homeland with Vaughan Williams’ gorgeous aural tapestry of London, each movement capturing the great city’s many moods. The program also introduces TFO audiences to Esther Yoo on Mendelssohn’s popular Violin Concerto. The brilliant American-Korean violinist is the first ever artist-in-residence with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. (It also should be noted that Mendelssohn was no stranger to England, where he always received a warm welcome.) Rounding out the program is one of Maestro Francis’ favorite composers, Edward Elgar, with In the South (Alassio).
