HK Gruber: Aerial
Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet Overture – Fantasy
Bernstein: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

An evening of timeless love stories: Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. It also celebrates a century of Bernstein with his jazzy Prelude, Fugues and Riffs, which features new Principal Clarinet Natalie Hoe.

“The real gem is we have the best trumpeter on the planet coming to play with us. He’s a superstar,” says Michael Francis of Håkan Hardenberger, who will make his TFO debut with Aerial, a trumpet concerto written for him by HK Gruber. The piece is jazzy and quirky, with unusual moments where Hardenberger will play a conch shell and play into the piano. “It’s a very surprising and memorable piece,” Francis says.

*The Florida Orchestra will premiere five short celebratory fanfares written by faculty composers from universities around the state for its Florida Fanfare Project.  The debut works add a true Florida flair to TFO’s 50th anniversary celebration while supporting new music and showcasing the extraordinary talent in the state.
