Acclaimed as “a first-rate Mozartean” by The Chicago Tribune, Orli Shaham performs Mozart’s intensely dramatic, yet poetic and lyrical, Piano Concerto No. 20. The program includes Britten’s memorial to his parents and those lost in WWI, Sinfonia da Requiem, along with Richard Strauss’ commanding and powerful tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra, well known as the theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Michael Francis conducts.

Elgar's Cello Concerto

Principal Cellist James Connors plays Elgar’s noble and profoundly beautiful Cello Concerto on this program with Haydn’s Symphony No. 88, with its wonderful blend of lively and stately themes, and Dvorák’s sunny and idyllic Symphony No. 8. Mei-Ann Chen conducts.

Bravo Beethoven!

Hailed for his “exquisite playing” by The New York Times, Irish pianist John O’Conor is the soloist in the powerfully dramatic Piano Concerto No. 3 in this all-Beethoven concert that opens with the Egmont Overture and concludes with the buoyant and charming Symphony No. 6, “Pastorale.”  Marcelo Lehninger conducts.

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Singled out for his “disarming elegance and charisma” as a performer by Le Monde de la Musique, Andrew von Oeyen performs Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in a concert with Michael Daugherty’s salute to Superman with his Red Cape Tango and Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, evolving from moody and dark to its brilliant finale. Daniel Hege conducts.

Korngold's Violin Concerto

Lauded by The Dallas Morning News as “a dazzling soloist,” Caroline Goulding plays Korngold’s film-theme-inspired and crowd-pleasing Violin Concerto.  The program also includes Thomas Adès’ deliciously playful Dances from Powder Her Face and Prokofiev’s hymn to the human spirit, Symphony No. 5. Stuart Malina conducts.

Tan Dun's Water Concerto

Principal Percussionist John Shaw promises to delight and enchant concertgoers with Chinese composer Tan Dun’s Water Concerto, which has been hailed by the critics as “hypnotic,” “other-worldly” and “playful and profound.” The concert also includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 103, “Drum Roll,” and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2. Rossen Milanov conducts.

Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe
Fri, May 30, 8 pm, Straz Center, Carol Morsani Hall

The evening opens with Haydn’s buoyant Symphony No. 60, “Il Distrato.”  This is followed by Toru Takemitsu’s dreamy soundscape Toward the Sea II, which is an apt prelude to Ravel’s dazzlingly lush symphonic palette of orchestral colors in the full ballet score of Daphnis et Chloé. Joshua Weilerstein conducts.
