Clay Ellerbroek, Principal
Clay Ellerbroek was awarded the position of principal flute with The Florida Orchestra in March of 2009 after serving as the ensemble's acting principal flutist beginning in the spring of the 2007/08 season.
Ellerbroek began his studies at the age of thirteen in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Later, he studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy and then went on to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he mentored with Leone Buyse and Paula Robison.
He performs regularly with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera and at the Mainly Mozart and Crested Butte music festivals. He has also been heard with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Honolulu Symphony and Mladi Chamber Orchestra in Los Angeles as well as performed at Tanglewood, the Grand Teton Music Festival and La Jolla Music Society Summerfest. At the request of Maestro Jahja Ling, he also performed as acting principal flute for the San Diego Symphony's 2005/2006 season.
He has been featured in a recording for Bridge Records of music by the composer Chinary Ung, which made The New York Times' list of Records of the Year for 2009. In the fall of 2011, he performed in Cuba with The Florida Orchestra Principal Winds Quintet as part of TFO's historical and ongoing cultural exchange with the island nation.
