Ignacio "Nachito" Herrera

Ignacio "Nachito" Herrera stunned Cuban audiences at the age of twelve, performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Havana Symphony Orchestra. He received his early training in piano from such Cuban masters as Rubén González, Jorge Gómez Labraña, and Frank Fernández.  In the late 1990s, he joined the famed musical group ¡Cubanismo! as its lead pianist, arranger, and musical director, playing many of the world’s finest concert halls and prestigious festivals.  With a foundation in both classical music and Afro-Cuban jazz and popular music, his concert engagements cover a broad selection of venues and musical partners, including the Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Lucia Jazz, Chicago Jazz Festival, Twin Cities Hot Summer Jazz Festival, Afro-Cuban All Stars and Buena Vista Social Club.

Now living in Minnesota, his quintet, Puro Cubano, performs regularly throughout the Twin Cities. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune has described Herrera’s musicianship as "Explosive. Crowd pleasing. Rhythmically intense. Romantic. Dynamic. Jaw-droppingly good" and jazz critic and Playboy Guide to Jazz author Neil Tesser places Herrera in "the upper echelon -- a trinity comprising Chucho Valdés, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and now Nachito Herrera.”

Herrera received his training at Alejandro García Caturla Conservatory of Music and the Superior Institute of Art in Havana, Cuba, where he earned a master's degree in piano and composition and a doctorate in music.  In addition to being an award-winning pianist, he has also studied trumpet, bass and drums and is recognized for his skills as a music director, arranger and composer.
